Damien Hirst - 'Abalone Acetone Powder'- a spot painting

Hi guys!
Today is the 'inspired by art' challenge day, yay! Some of you may know that I have a master's degree in Art history (yes, you may judge me in the comments), so I was quite happy with this challenge at first. But...when I started thinking about what to do, so many images flooded my mind that it was impossible to think of something to do. Most of my favourite art does not translate well to such a small space as a manicure, and I don't have any freehand skills :(

In the end I went with a recreation of a 'spot painting' by Damien Hirst. He has made quite a few of these and I always love how colourful and rhythmic they are. The one in the picture above is called 'Abalone Acetone Powder'. The thing about these paintings is that every dot is a different colour, there won't be 2 spots the same in one painting. So that's what I did for the spots on my nails too. I took all my crème polishes (I'm not going to name every colour I used lol) and made every spot a different colour. I didn't have enough polishes to do both hands in unique spots, but I did have enough for my picture hand. For the white base I used OPI Alpine snow.

I am kind of disappointed with myself because I was looking forward to this challenge and I know a lot of art, but I still ended up with something relatively easy. I hope you guys still like it though and see you next week!

Stay tuned for challenge day 27: Inspired By A Flag!

  1. Aww! That is absolutely stunning, I adore how colourful this is! Such fun! *-* And the fact that not even two dots are in the same colour is so interesting, both about the painting and your nails! Plus I don't think you should be upset about it, it's totally hard to transfer some art onto nails, and you did this task just amazing, showing people this kind of interesting art (and I'm sure no one doubts you have amazing art knowledge!! :)), plus being huge inspiration for others, because not everybody can do freehand designs and your creation can be done easier than that, still with stunning effect! You rock <3

Wow, I never saw this painting before. The only thing linked to Hurst in my mind was the shark :)
