A comparison between Chanel Taboo and a possible dupe!

Chanel Taboo dupe comparison Kiko 497 Pearly Indian Violet
Hi loves! So, when I was in Germany last weekend I obviously had to visit Kiko. I really love that shop and even though I can now order from their online shop, nothing beats holding the bottles of polish in your hand. When I was browsing the display I noticed a polish that looked very much like the gorgeous Chanel Taboo. I had to grab it and compare it for you!

Chanel Taboo was released Spring 2013 and it had everyone swooning over this gorgeous deep, eggplant shade with that sprinkle of blue shimmer and lovely deep reddish shimmer. It almost looks like a galaxy in a bottle. But, the price is steep and not everyone is a fan of Chanel's formula - a lot of people experience quick chipping. So when I saw Kiko 497 Pearly Indian Violet, my heart jumped - it's only €1,90 in store (but €2,50 on the site.. weird!).

Here's the sad news: they aren't dead on dupes. Here's the good news: people that aren't looking at your nails like we usually do (hitting your eyeball with your nail, or is that just me?) won't notice they vary slightly. I painted my nails with 2 coats of both the Kiko (index, ring) and Chanel (middle, pinky) shade, and the formula feels the same. Pigmented, buttery, easy to apply. Not too thick nor too thin, spreading well and if you are careful and have shorter nails, opaque in a single coat. Even the amount of shine is almost the same in both polishes. I didn't use topcoat here to show them as they are.

The difference for me lies in the amount of red you see in the Kiko shade. It's a tad warmer and redder compared to Chanel, which is a bit more purple and colder in appareance. Note that these pictures are made upclose and under bright lighting, in regular daylight and with a normal viewing distance these minor differences won't even be noticable.

I hope you liked this comparison post and hopefully this helps if you wanted the beauty of Chanel Taboo, but can't or won't afford the price that comes with it! The Kiko bottle does hold a bit less (11 ml. versus 13 ml.) but it's also about €20 cheaper.

Which one would you pick? Do you choose the original or would you prefer to spend less even though it isn't a 100% dupe? Tell me in the comments!
Kiko Cosmetics has stores all over Europe and also an online shop.

  1. I've seen this comparison on a german blog, too, and immediatly placed an order with Kiko. Today I picked this polish up at the post office (along with some others, of course) :-)

  5. "Hitting your eyeball with your nail" is not just you. Funny! as my eyes get older, I have started using a magnifying tool, similar to what jewellers use to see stone facets just so I can admire glass flecks and microshimmers in all their glory! Thanks for the lovely comparison. I already have Taboo, but if Kiko was sold near me, I think I'd want that as well. I always wished the red shimmer in Taboo was more front and center. The indigo base sort of overwhelms it.

  6. Yay! A Kiko store is opening up near me so I will definitely be grabbing this shade as I haven't sprung for Taboo yet :p

  7. omg gorgeous Deborah!!! As for striper brushes, I won't use anything else but water based ones. They don't get thick or gloopy and the quality of both the formula and brush is far superior! I recommend both ORLY Instant Artist and It's So Easy Stripe Rite :) You'll never go back haha!
