Hi loves! Welcome to another installment of Learning the Lingo! In this series I will talk about products you might use maintaining your nails and such, what my favorite product is in that category and to keep it fun and to learn something, I'll tell you the Dutch word for it too :-D! I hope you enjoy this post, let's get started with today's subject.
Cuticle (wiki quote) - A cuticle /ˈkjuːtɪkəl/, or cuticula, is a term used for any of a variety of tough but flexible, non-mineral outer coverings of an organism, or parts of an organism, that provide protection. Various types of "cuticle" are non-homologous, differing in their origin, structure, function, and chemical composition.
The Dutch word for cuticle oil is nagelriem olie.
Cuticle oil is an important part of your hand care regime. It provides moisture but can also help to fight little infections, builds a barrier for weather influences and on top of that it can smell delicious too! The most common ingredients for cuticle oils are almond oil, jojoba seed oil, tea tree oil, grape seed oil among others. There might also be shea butter or cocoa butter included in the formula. Also vitamins and essential oils (for the scent) can be added.
The oil can be put into bottles, usually the same style as a brands polish bottles and with a brush included, but also in little veils with a dropper instead of a brush or pens that you have to twist and click in order for the product to come out. It all depends on where and when you want to use the product to determine which style of packaging suits you best. I like to keep a bottle with brush by my bed, but throw a clickie pen in my purse for moisturizing on the go.
My personal favorites right now are the Sephora Original Nourishing Cutcile Oil in a click-and-twist pen and the Bliss Kiss Nail Oil using it straight from the refill bottle (since I gifted my pen to my aunt in order for her to have nice nails on her wedding ;-)). The pen is great for using during the day, also because it doesn't leave my skin as greasy. It's also great to use before pictures because of it. The Bliss Kiss Nail Oil is more moisturizing I think but also looks more greasy.

What's the word for cuticle oil in your language? Tell me in the comments!
In french : Huile à cuticule :) I still love this topic! For the moment dutches words are pronounceable :p
ReplyDeleteIn Russian - "масло для кутикулы" ("maslo dlya kutikuly").
ReplyDeleteHaha, today I started using Bliss Kiss for the first time - looks like my nails are super-thirsty )) Before that, I occasionally used Glisten & Glow or KBShimmer cuticle oil.
In Polish: olejek do skórek :) I always forget to use it :)
ReplyDeleteIn Italian: Olio per cuticole
ReplyDeleteI need to use them more, my cuticle are always dry > <
In german it would be "Nagelhaut-Öl", but usually it's just called "Nagelöl" (nail oil). I mixed mine myself using almond, avocado and argan oil, and filled it in a small bottle with a roller ball (like a deodorant roll on but way smaller) on top.
ReplyDeleteIn serbian: Ulje za zanoktice
ReplyDelete:) I love to use all kinds of cuticle oil
Oh this is beautiful! I love love love this!
ReplyDeleteI am happy you are enjoying the series! Do you have any suggestions which topic I should cover next :)? The French word is still recognizable to me, but my pronunciation sucks haha.
ReplyDeleteDid it absorb super quick :)? Are you doing the 3 day challenge with it?
ReplyDeleteTry and remember, at least each night before bed! Really helps :).
ReplyDeleteThat's not too difficult! Maybe I should try and learn Italian ;-).
ReplyDeleteYeah, I don't think anyone here says nagelriem olie, just nagelolie indeed.
ReplyDeleteIs it expensive to buy those oils? And do you have any recommendations on where to purchase those?
That sounds like it smells delicious!
ReplyDeleteI had to get used to using a glass file as well! The sound would make me cringe and if I have to take down a lot of length it still does, so I usually clip the most length and then file the last bit.
ReplyDeleteOooh that's such a shame! I am always scared to drop it.
ReplyDeleteThanks, glad you like it :)! I'm always surprised how long Russian words are, or at least seem to be to me.
ReplyDeleteThat IS annoying! Why would you write that?!
ReplyDeleteI am! And it absorbs in a snap! I can't believe there will be a moment when it begins to stay on my nails for some time ))
ReplyDeleteindeed they are ) that's why it's quite hard to write poems in Russian :)
ReplyDeleteI have absolutely no idea how to pronounce that ;-).
ReplyDeleteThanks Virginie ^^!
ReplyDeleteAnd lima stands for the file part, right?
ReplyDeleteI guess because they're too lazy to think about the word and realize that it makes no sense...
ReplyDeleteThe oils are pretty cheap (the most expenisve I've got is argan oil for about 12 Euro for 50ml) but they usually come in bottles of at least 50ml, so it's only worth buying if you can use them for other things too, like skin or hair care (I always use them for my hair), as you should use them up in a couple of months. You can get them at pharmacies, health shops, some drugstores or online stores that sell stuff for mixing your own cosmetics (that's where you find the bottles/pots/etc. you might need, too).
ReplyDeleteThanks dear, I'll look into it!
ReplyDeleteCuticle oils are everything to me!! Though I switch it up a lot, right now I like to use cuticle creams or butters. Especially Burt's Bees Lemon Cuticle Butter and (my #1 favourite) Badger Cuticle Balm. I love CND SolarOil because it smells like almonds, that's probably my favourite oil. Is Bliss Kiss worth getting?
ReplyDeleteShe really is! And so sparkly!
ReplyDeleteCan you believe I've never tried any of the products you just mentioned? Which of these do you recommend most :)?
ReplyDeleteHmm, I'm not sure. It's a good oil, but I think it's a bit hyped and it's a bit expensive to get for us Europeans.
