Learning the Lingo - Holographic finish

Hi loves! Welcome to another installment of Learning the Lingo! In this series I will talk about products you might use maintaining your nails and such, what my favorite product is in that category and to keep it fun and to learn something, I'll tell you the Dutch word for it too :-D! I hope you enjoy this post, let's get started with today's subject.

Holography (wiki quote) - Holography is a technique which enables three-dimensional images (holograms) to be made. It involves the use of a laser, interference, diffraction, light intensity recording and suitable illumination of the recording. The image changes as the position and orientation of the viewing system changes in exactly the same way as if the object were still present, thus making the image appear three-dimensional.

The holographic recording itself is not an image; it consists of an apparently random structure of either varying intensity, density or profile.

The Dutch word for holographic is holografisch. Usually I just say holo or "OOH LOOK A RAINBOW!".

While holographic polishes used to be more rare, nowadays they are easy to find and even pop up in drugstore collections. The effect is very pretty and shows best in fluorescent light or sunlight, making you stare at your nails all the time. How the strong the effect is depends on the quality of pigment used and also the amount of it. There are true linear holo's, scattered holo's, polishes that combine those two effects and also holographic glitters. What they all have in common is that they can produce a little rainbow on your nails!

I think the most coveted holographic polish is Chanel Holographic. This silver based beauty produces an impressive holo flame! But also the China Glaze OMG collection as well as old OPI DS polishes still spark most people's interest, also because they became collectors items.

My personal favorite holographic polishes are from Too Fancy Lacquer and F.U.N Lacquer. These indies both produce lovely lacquers with outstanding formula's!

What's the word for holographic in your language? And what's your favorite holo brand or polish?

Russian: голографик (golografik) - pretty much the same!
Holo is my favourite kind of finish. This love started about 2,5 years ago. I accidentally picked a holo polish from "sale" pile and when I first painted my nails with it and went into the sun, I was like "ooh... aah... nail polish can be like this?! gimme more!"
Can you believe, this was China Glaze OMG! I bought this one and LOL on sale for $3 each. And then I was lucky enough to get the rest of the collection for a nice price ($10 per bottle).
That was a beginning of a long love story :) I fell for Enchanted Polish back in 2012 when there wasn't so much drama about it yet. I still love it but it's so hard to buy EP for sensible money now (and eBay resellers really have some nerve with their prices).
Now my favourite linear holos are from Too Fancy Lacquer, Lilypad Lacquer and Colors by Llarowe (their Mighty Red Baron is outstanding).
Adina from A-England is definitely the queen of tightly scattered holo. I love her scattered holos so much that I simply collected all of them.
And I have a huge thing for Picture Polish/ Zoya/ Dance Legend type of holo, too - these holo/glass flecs scattered finish.

  3. Thanks for this! I think waaaay too many people abuse the H word and use it to describe shimmers that are definitely not true holos. My favorite holos have to be the China Glaze OMG collection, they were just perfect!

  8. Finally, it's explained! Thank you! I've seen many people calling different polishes holographic so it totally confused me about which ones are truly holos!

  11. Haha everytime I wear one I have to be careful in the car because my nails distract me! And wow, I'm jealous of your finds - such a good price!

Yeah EP sounds too nerve wrecking, I just can't. Colors by Llarowe is on my wishlist, especially Mighty Red Baron! Good to hear it lives up to the hype :).

Sounds like we have a lot of loves in common ;-).

  17. Holo is hands down my favorite finish! Since Vika's already told you the word in Russian, I'll just share some of my favorite brands (it's just impossible to choose one!). So, for scattered holo, Picture Polish is my go-to brand. Along with A-England, the brand was my introduction to the world of holo and will always hold a special place in my heart. Whenever I go on a trip, I always take a couple of PPs with me - they're just perfect in every way!
For linear, i second you on Too Fancy Lacquer, and I also love Dance Legend New Prism line, although I wish they would do more color options. Lilypad Lacquer and Pahlish are also pretty awesome! In fact, I don't think I've come across a single holo I didn't like. I have a dozen untried holos in my stash, including those from Emily de Molly, Colors by Llarowe etc., but I'm sure they won't disappoint.
For holo glitter, the Forces from EdM and KBShimmer holo glitters are my favorites, along with Darling Diva Polish Muscle Car Diva collection, but again, I haven't tried a lot of other brands that look fabulous, so I'm sure they're great, too.

  19. The amount of brand offering holo polishes these days is seriously overwhelming (in a good way)! And i want to try every-single-one of them :D To think that I used to dislike holo finish just some 2 years ago!
