Colors by Llarowe The Mighty Red Baron

Hi loves! Today I am showing you a polish I had been lusting after for a while, and recently I decided to go ahead and purchase Colors by Llarowe The Mighty Red Baron through Hypnotic Polish (hint: there's a sale going on right now and it ends November 2nd!). The reviews about this indie had been nothing but raving and since I love a good vampy red shade, this felt like an appropriate introduction.

Curious to see what I thought about this shade? Read on to find out.

Like I said this was my first experience with CbL and when it arrived, the packaging immediately appealed to me. Square bottle are easy to stash, and the brush cap isn't too small but not too large either compared to the size of the bottle. The brush is a bit wider and flat, easy to control and flexible without splaying all over the place. It picks up enough product but doesn't glob at all.

The shade is a tad deeper and darker than shown in my pictures, and it has a gorgeous linear holographic finish. While Llarowe recommends to intensify the holo effect with top coat, I did notice it got a bit weaker when I used my Glisten & Glow HK Girl top coat.

The Mighty Red Baron has a lovely, buttery and opaque formula that almost applies itself. It doesn't take much effort at all to create a neat line at the cuticle and it dries down smooth.

But.. there's one MAJOR let down with this shade. It stained my nails like crazy. I had to seriously buff them to remove the gross red stain left behind and normally Duri Rejuvacote protects nicely against stainers. Wear a double or triple base coat if you wear this beauty!

Do I recommend this shade? Definitely. The depth and beauty of the color outweigh the staining problem. And in the end, aren't our nails always covered? Who cares about a stain, right ;-)?

Is this shade you'd wear? And what's the worst case of stains you've ever encountered?

That's CbL's best polish, for sure! Hmm, I had zero staining with this one (even without base). My worst stainer is CbL Gemini Rising - a vibrant green. Two coats of base saved me from green nails... but I still got prominent yellow stains.
A friend of mine uses a combination of peel-off and regular base to prevent stains. First she paints her nails with Nail Pattern Boldness Glitter-A-Peel (non-glue-based peel-off base), then Duri Rejuvacote, then the polish. For her that trick works, I'll definitely try it when I receive CbL Penny for your thoughts (a known stainer, too).

  4. This color is GORGEOUS. Though whenever I hear about polishes staining the nails it definitely makes me think twice about wearing them!

  5. This has got to be one of the most elegant shimmering reds that I have seen! GORGEOUS!

  6. Oooh, this is a beauty! I think the worst staining I've had is from Sally Hansen Fairy Teal. I love the colour, but it's kind of put me off reaching for it again when I have another colour that will do. It's silly, because I agree - my nails are always polished anyway!

  7. HOLY MOLY! I need to have this in my life... it looks like fire! Kinda crappy about the staining but like you said... we are always painted anyways, so really... who cares!

  8. This is a beautiful polish with a spot on name! One of my Pahlishes stained so bad, but to be honest, I didn't care because it was so pretty!

  9. I've wanted this one for so long! this post is not helping! Staining be damned, I neeeeeeed it!

  10. What in the heck!? This is AMAZING. Wai you gotta stain, polish? OPI Fly was one of the worst stainers for me which is so sad because it's one of my favorite polish shades ever. :(

  11. Oh boy! This is one schmexy red! So pretty in fact that I might bypass the fact it stains and still wear it! I wonder if you layered one coat over a red base that didn't stain if it would be better?

  12. GAH! Fly is one of my all time faves too and it stained my nails horribly. That doesn't stop me from wearing it though, I'm too stubborn!

  24. oh my gosh - this screams ruby slippers to me... I am in love. It's too bad it stains though... I would still use it anyway - I can't stop looking at it.

  25. So gorgeous! I do not know how this is still in my untrieds but it will be perfect for the holidays!

  26. Gorgeous shade. I've never tried CBL but I've heard mixed reviews so I'm reluctant to spend my hard earned moola on them. :/

  27. That is gorgeous! I don't like staining polishes... Some, I'll wear anyway, but it can usually find another color I like better that doesn't stain.

  28. This is such a beauty! Major bummer about the staining though, no bueno!

  30. I guess I've always stared at this shade in complete adoration and never really read through the lines because I realized it's a stainer only when reading your post. That sucks! But CbL's holos are so gorgeous and I really wanted this one badly :(

    ReplyDelete
  31. That's one sweet comment indeed Em! And I'll wear it again as well, just with 2/3 layers of base coat underneath ;-).

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh yes, greens can be a bish as well! Weird how this didn't stain your nails at all though..

Next time I'm wearing this I'll use a combination of base coats to prevent staining. Or just only wear it when a buff is needed ^^.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes it definitely makes you hesitant to putting it on again, but I'll make an exception for this red.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thank you Lola, glad you like it so much!

  35. Teals are sometimes such a pain in the ass! And yes, our nails are always polished but it just feels icky if you take off your polish and your nails are so badly stained :(.

    ReplyDelete
  36. It sure is Jessica! Ooh, luckily it was pretty enough to compensate the staining then :).

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yes! I still recommend it even with the staining!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Do you ever still wear OPI Fly or are you done with it now you've found out it stains so bad? I still love this shade but will take some extra precautions when wearing it again!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Characteristic of a true polish lover: wear the damn polish even if it stains ;-).

    ReplyDelete
  40. That might work indeed, clever thinking Dani! Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I was so upset when I removed it! But oh well, I needed a buff anyway..

    ReplyDelete
  42. If that's what you are looking for I can definitely recommend it :D

    ReplyDelete
  43. You are welcome! I hadn't read about it myself yet so I was quite surprised

I've tried this combination of bases with Penny For Your Thoughts and it worked like a charm, no staining! Strongly recommended ))

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'll definitely use it again! Just double or triple the base coat and it should be fine. I hope.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It definitely will be! Just use some extra base coat ;-).

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hmm, I must say this experience (besides the staining) was very good but I get the feeling. If it isn't what you expected it's such a waste of money!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I can imagine Nidia! I know that I won't find anything close to this so I'll put up with it but if there's something similar enough, I say no to staining too!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I hadn't read about it either Simona! Maybe the polish just stained on me? Not sure..
