Hi loves! Today I have something exciting to share with you all: a brand new indie brand! A while back I was contacted by Deanna and Aubrey, the mother-daughter duo behind Black Dahlia Lacquer. They asked me if I had any interest in reviewing some of their polishes launching soon. It was actually quite amazing because they were releasing 3 (!) collections at once and I could pick whatever I liked! To have a nice representation of the brand without a too scattered look at it, I went with the full Essentials collection (swatches & review coming soon) and 6 shades from the Fall collection which I'll be reviewing today.
Black Dahlia Lacquer is a 5-free and vegan indie brand run by the mother-daughter duo Deanna and Aubrey, and it seems they really put some thought and preparation in the launch of their brand. From the unique bottles to the website, everything looks very professional to me. When my polishes arrived they were all wrapped up nicely and put in cute pouches. The bottles have a unique shape and hold 14 ml., the brush stem is long but offers a nice control over the formula. The brush itself is flat, not too wide nor narrow and paints really nicely.
Each polish had a good formula, though some needed a coat more than others. Maximum coats needed was 3 which isn't bad at all! I want to apologize in advance for the weird matte tips you'll spot on Blood Roses, somehow my topcoat decided shiny wasn't enough anymore and went matte as well in the process..
Let's get to it, shall we ^^?
Black Dahlia Lacquer African Violets is the sweetest shade of periwinkle blue. In the bottle you detect a strong holographic effect but on the nails this translates as a very scattered holographic sparkle instead. The formula was flowy and nice, 3 coats were used to be sure of opacity but I think in real life 2 might be enough as well.
Black Dahlia Lacquer Basket of Gold is a silver and gold glitter topper in a clear base. Some glitter is also holographic which makes it really sparkly! The website says you can build this up to a full coverage glitter as well but I just adore it like this. Application was nice, I both dabbed and brushes to place the glitter a bit. The basecolor is Black Dahlia Lacquer Black Iris which I'll review soon!
Black Dahlia Lacquer Blood Roses is totally my kind of shade and I had actually worn this already before taking these swatch pictures! I am sorry about the weird matte tips, I noticed when editing or I would have redone my topcoat to take better pictures.
This vampy dark bordeaux shade needed 3 coats for opacity (I use thin coats) and it dried really glossy by itself. Application was good just be careful with it around your cuticles, clean up is always a bit harder with shades this dark.
Black Dahlia Lacquer Olaf's Snowflower was a surprise favorite for me. A creamy white crelly base filled with white and gold glitter as well as holographic glitter. Formula was great, just 2 thin coats for opacity and it didn't seem to dry vert gritty or bumpy so one layer of topcoat is enough.
Black Dahlia Lacquer Silver Willow is a medium blue shade in the bottle, but pulls very greenish/grey on me. I don't mind as I looove the color that way but it might turn up differently on someone else! The holographic effect is quite strong but not overpowering and the formula was perfect, 2 coats that almost applied themselves.
Black Dahlia Lacquer Wild Cherry Blossoms is the cheeriest shade out of these 6, being a pink toned red holographic shade that reminds me of juicy fruit. The holographic effect is a bit absorbed by the pigmented base but still provides a nice sparkle. Even though the basecolor is quite pigmented, I used 3 coats to be sure it was opaque. Again, flawless formula!
After painting these 6 shades and also trying out one for a day I can say I'm impressed with this new indie brand and this release. The colors are all very pretty, the formula is great with each shade and you can tell by everything around it this wasn't created in a rush. Somewhere next week I'll show you the Essentials collection and hopefully it's as good as this one!
Which shade would be your favorite? And have you heard of Black Dahlia Lacquer before? Tell me in the comments!
