Swatches & Review - Il Était Un Vernis License To Polish

Hi loves! Today I have swatches and a review of the new Il Était Un Vernis License To Polish collection. Il Était Un Vernis is a lab-created indie brand, founded by 2 French bloggers but produced in Australia. A while back they released their first collection and now the gorgeous second collection is here! License To Polish consists of 5 shades, all with a perfect formula and unique shade.

I'm doing this review together with my blogging buddy Emily, so if you are curious how she presents these shades (I bet her swatches are stunning!) please head over to Very Emily and check it out!

This is my first experience with this brand and so far it has been a pleasure. The package arrived well packed, with a cute cotton pouch and button. The pouch is limited to the first 100 purchases of 3 or more polishes from the License To Polish collection, and the button is included in all orders that have a License To Polish shade among it.

Like I said in the intro, the formula is really lovely. Besides Juggling Glass Balls all shades were easy 2 coaters, most being opaque in 1 coat already. They dried down smooth and shiny, so I didn't use any topcoat in my pictures! The brush is flat and a little bit wider but not too wide (smaller than OPI's brush, which is maximum width for me to comfortably polish my nails). The brush cap is rubberized which is awesome, as it provides better grip (I'm a klutz and regularly drop my brush...). Another great selling point are the square bottles, the hold 12 ml. Also, the formula is 5-free and vegan, so that's great too!

Without further ado, let's check the swatches :-).

Il Était Un Vernis Drop Dead GorgeousIl Était Un Vernis Drop Dead GorgeousIl Était Un Vernis Drop Dead Gorgeous
Il Était Un Vernis Drop Dead Gorgeous honors it's name - it is drop dead gorgeous! Described as a brown espresso shade with bronze undertones, this surely is a dark and vampy shade of brown. On me and in my pictures it reads very olive, though in the bottle I can clearly tell it's a brown hue, so don't be surprised if it shows a bit different on you. Perfect formula, 2 coats used.

Il Était Un Vernis In Teal We TrustIl Était Un Vernis In Teal We TrustIl Était Un Vernis In Teal We Trust
Il Était Un Vernis In Teal We Trust is one of my favorites, but that shouldn't be too surprising.. it's teal ;-)! Described as a blue leaning metallic teal, it sometimes shows it's green hues better and other times takes away your breath with the sparkly finish. A mesmerizing finish! Perfect formula, 2 coats used.

Il Était Un Vernis Juggling Glass BallsIl Était Un Vernis Juggling Glass BallsIl Était Un Vernis Juggling Glass Balls
Il Était Un Vernis Juggling Glass Balls is the only shade that definitely needed 3 coats for opacity, but that's because it can also be used as a topper. Described as a transparant base saturated with holographic microglitter and matte silver flakies, the way you wear it will highlight the different aspects of this shade.

Il Était Un Vernis Something To RememberIl Était Un Vernis Something To RememberIl Était Un Vernis Something To Remember
Il Était Un Vernis Something To Remember surprised me positively. It's described as a soft mauve shade, this might appear a bit classic and neutral at first, but the pink shimmer and holographic sparkle will surprise you in brighter lighting. I've already worn this twice! The formula is the thickest out of all 5, and you barely need 2 coats.

Il Était Un Vernis We Want You For NPA ArmyIl Était Un Vernis We Want You For NPA ArmyIl Était Un Vernis We Want You For NPA Army
Il Était Un Vernis We Want You For NPA Army is a gorgeous shade of green. Described as a lovely light color in the shade because of the golden flakies, the holographic effect really comes to life in the sun. It's definitely sparkly and attention grabbing! Perfect formula, 2 coats used.

Overall conclusion
This has been my first introduction to the brand and they really impressed me! Good quality polishes, well executed branding and fun colors. While almost everything is perfect about this new brand, I do wish they had screenprinted bottles instead of logo stickers - it's just that little last step to make everything perfect in my opinion. In Teal We Trust and Something To Remember are my favorites, but all shades are worth your time and consideration I think.

Have you ever heard of Il Était Un Vernis? And what do you think about these shades? Tell me in the comments!
Il Était Un Vernis can be bought in their own webshop, you can also check the listed stockists for other e-tailers. Each shade costs €12,90 and currently their first collection is on sale! All shades are 5-free and vegan.
